Summer Camp
2008
This was the best week of Summer Camp to date. Everyone earned merit badges
and most were Eagle required so it was a very productive week. Badges included:
Environmental Science, Life Saving, Shotgun, Personal Fitness, Art and a
few others. This year we set camp at Algonquin for the first time. Everyone
agreed that it's a great site so we have adopted it as our new Summer Camp
site and have already reserved it for next year. We had our traditional Thursday
evening cracker barrel with the camp staff and we were also visited by our
Eagle Corp, Vinny, Ryan, Joey and DJ. To help us meet the two deep leadership
guidelines, Gordon Harris spent two days with us as well.
Service
Projects:
Crew members have been visiting Strang Scout Reservation for their entire
scouting careers. From Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and now with B.S.A. Venturing.
The camp has served us well. Adult leaders decided to give back and spend
their week performing maintenance projects throughout the camp.
Waterfront:
Jay Decco our waterfront director had mentioned that after years of use,
all but one sail boat were out of commission. Damages consisted of smashed
bows from ramming the dock and other boats, to damaged keels and broken rudders
from years of Indian war canoe landings on the beach. Chuck and Paul,
A.K.A. Mario and Luigi decided take on the task of repairing 6 sail boats.
Five were in need of fiberglass repairs and one had a broken rudder mount.
By weeks end the entire flotilla was back on the water, tied to their moorings
and battle ready.
Handicapped
Bathroom:
Don Melodia and his son DJ installed new fixtures this week to complete an
ongoing project of a handicapped bathroom. The camp will now meet B.S.A.
and state standards. Don headed the project from planning and assembling
a work party through completion. The new bathroom includes a wheelchair
accessible shower stall and diaper changing station for convenience of visitors
with infants.
Alqonquin
Latrine:
Chuck installed new spring closures on the latrine doors and toilet seats
in the Algonquin Latrine to meet B.S.A. standards. These improvements will
help units attain higher scores in the daily camp inspections.
